Crisis Communication and Community Support

During challenging times, effective communication becomes even more crucial. I developed a comprehensive crisis communication plan during a period when Illinois libraries were receiving threats related to ongoing national debates about banned books and free speech.

Responsive Communication in Sensitive Moments:

Pride Post - June 2024
Our Pride Month post, this Summer, unexpectedly blew up after some not-so-friendly shares. But our amazing community rallied around us, showing what inclusivity really means.

Check out this video by Angela Hursh breaking down how we handled it. It’s funny how much I can learn from just one post. 🤓

Thank you, Angela, for the shoutout and for spreading the word on keeping libraries open for everyone.

  • “As a regular patron of the Palatine Library District, I am writing to express my full support for Pride Month. Members, regardless of race or gender, should be able to access any book or other form of media at the patron's discretion. Pride Month is a form of freedom that we should all celebrate. I also want to express my full support for LGBTQ materials through library displays and programs, which are part of the library's initiative to increase knowledge, literacy and community awareness.
I may be part of the silent majority in our community, but I will not allow the loud minority to fill my community with hate, bigotry and ignorance.” -Steven P., Palatine Community Member

  • “Thank you for acknowledging PRIDE and for saving teen lives. Affirming communities reduce the suicide risk in teens. LGBBTQ teens have the highest rate of suicide. I applaud the library for having books for EVERYONE. Thank you.

Xiang - Community Mourning Support
Recently, after the unexpected and sudden death of a co-worker, I feel that my communication skills were put to a test. It was very important to me that I support and communicate properly with my co-workers and community during such a hard time.

I also had the opportunity to take the initiative in researching, writing, finding pics, creating, and posting a public death announcement and tribute to Xiang. This was something I never imagined I would do but it was very nice to be able to honest with our community and honor him and the rest of our staff. I think that it has been very important to give everyone the time to mourn together.

My plan ensures:

  • Clear, consistent messaging during emergencies

  • Support for vulnerable community members

  • Maintenance of essential services when possible

  • Transparent communication about service changes

  • Resources for staff and community recovery

Our community partnerships become especially valuable during crises, as they help extend our support network and provide additional resources.
